چکیده

The in vivo apparent diffusion tensor (ADT) of spinal cord was measured in nine rats at 2.0 T using an interleaved multi-shot echo planar imaging (EPI) diffusion sequence. A technique that combines sliding acquisition and phase correction, based on a calibration scan, to reduce ghosting artifacts in the images introduced by the strong diffusion-sensitizing gradients was described. Two rotationally invariant parameters, the trace (actually trace/3, to be consistent with the published values) and the lattice anisotropy index (LAI) were estimated from the ADT. In in vivo cords, the mean white matter (WM) trace value (1.05 +/- 0.13 x 10(-3) mm(2)/sec) was found to be significantly higher than the gray matter (GM) trace (0. 84 +/- 0.12 x 10(-3) mm(2)/sec, p < 0.0025). Significant anisotropic diffusion was observed in both WM and GM, with greater anisotropy in the WM (LAI=0.59 +/- 0.04) than in the GM (LAI=0.47 +/- 0.06, p < 0. 0001). These results are in agreement with the in vivo values determined using the conventional spin-echo sequence. Magn Reson Med 42:300-306, 1999.

In Vivo Diffusion Tensor Imaging of the Rat Spinal Cord – Pilot Study

In vivo diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) of rat thoracic spinal cord was performed on five healthy rats. Axial diffusion images were obtained using a standard spin echo diffusion weighted sequence. The fractional anisotropy (FA), longitudinal (LD) and transverse (TD) diffusivities and the mean diffusivity were estimated. Differences in these parameters between white and grey matter were in accord...

Diffusion tensor MR imaging in chronic spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Diffusion tensor MR imaging is emerging as an important tool for displaying anatomic changes in the brain after injury or disease but has been less widely applied to disorders of the spinal cord. The aim of this study was to characterize the diffusion properties of the entire human spinal cord in vivo during the chronic stages of spinal cord injury (SCI). These data provi...

Diffusion tensor MR imaging of the neurologically intact human spinal cord.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The aim of this study was to characterize the diffusion properties of the entire human spinal cord in vivo. These data are essential for comparisons to pathologic conditions as well as for comparisons of different pulse sequence design parameters aimed to reduce scan time and more accurately determine diffusion coefficients. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 13 neurologi...

A Machine Learning Approach for Specification of Spinal Cord Injuries Using Fractional Anisotropy Values Obtained from Diffusion Tensor Images

Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) uses in vivo images that describe extracellular structures by measuring the diffusion of water molecules. These images capture axonal movement and orientation using echo-planar imaging and provide critical information for evaluating lesions and structural damage in the central nervous system. This information can be used for prediction of Spinal Cord Injuries (SCI...

Sensitivity-encoded diffusion tensor MR imaging of the cervical cord.

The aim of this study was to apply sensitivity-encoding (SENSE) echo-planar imaging (EPI) to diffusion tensor MR imaging of the cervical cord, an anatomic region where MR imaging is particularly challenging. This technique was implemented with a SENSE reduction factor of 2 and used for imaging a water phantom and five healthy volunteers. Off-resonance artifacts were notably reduced compared wit...
